June of 1940 marked the date that the United States Army requested bids from 135 automobile manufacturers to produce a 1/4 ton reconnaissance vehicle that would be customized to meet the needs of the Army. There were three manufacturers that submitted proposals, which were Willys, Bantam, and Ford. Within one year, the three companies designed the blueprint for the iconic vehicle that is now known as Jeep. The prototype was produced by Willys-Overland and was named Quad. Only two prototypes of this model were produced.
In the 1950s, automotive engineering was making great advancements, and there was a rise in recreational vehicles. The beginning of the Jamboree series included seven unique models. In 1950, Jeep became a registered trademark of the Willys-Overland brand. Only three years later the company was sold and became Willys Motors Inc. In 1953, the CJ model received an upgrade, and the CJ-5 also received an update in 1955.
During the 1960s, the manufacturer introduced the iconic Wagoneer. At the time, it was one of the most innovative vehicles on the market. It included the first automatic transmission and independent suspension system. In addition, the Gladiator pickup truck was also introduced during this decade. The CJ-5 and CJ-6 were equipped with the new Dauntless V6 engine that provided more power than previous engines. Willys Motors also produced a two-wheel Fleetvan that was manufactured for light-duty, multi-stop capability. This was a popular choice for postal delivery services and ice-cream trucks.
The 1970s was when the manufacturer introduced its first SUV with a full-time 4X4 system known as the Cherokee. In 1970, American Motors (AMC) bought the brand for $75 million. AMC was successful, and the company was producing more than 600 automobiles per day by 1978. In 1972, the company manufactured the first automatic full-time four-wheel drive system known as the Quandra-Trac 4×4 system. The popular CJ-7 model was introduced in 1976.
The XJ model was introduced in the 1980s and was the first 4-door sport utility vehicle. It also included the first UniFrame construction as well as the first full-time 4X4 system that offered shift-on-the-fly capability. From 1980-1986, a Laredo package was included with the CJ line, but this was discontinued because of the popular CJ-5 model. The Laredo package featured a chrome grille, wheels, bumpers, hood emblem, and trim.
The famous Grand Cherokee (ZJ) was introduced in the 90s, which was the first SUV to provide well-balanced on-road and off-road capability. In addition, the Wrangler (TJ) was introduced in 1997 and offered new coil suspension capability. In 1999, the Grand Cherokee (WJ) was released as the most capable sport utility vehicle on the market. The innovations that were offered with these models are why sales skyrocketed to 629K units during the 90s.
A number of new models were introduced after the merger of Chrysler and Daimler-Benz in 1998. In 2003, the Wrangler Rubicon was marketed as the most capable SUV ever offered from the manufacturer. The 4-door Wrangler was one of the most popular SUVs among consumers. There were special edition models of the Wrangler, TJ, and Wrangler Unlimited that hit the market in 2004 and offered a longer, stretched base. In addition, 2006 marked the year that the seven-passenger Commander was released, and the manufacturer also released the Patriot and Compass in 2007. The Cherokee (KK) was introduced in 2008.
This is the era when the all-new Grand Cherokee and Renegade were released. Fiat S.p.A. purchased the Chrysler Group in 2014, and the acquisition resulted in a new name known as FCA US LLC, which reflected the merger of the two companies. There were four new models of the Grand Cherokee that were introduced in 2014, which were the Sport, Limited, Latitude, and the Trailhawk. In 2016, more than 1.41 million units were sold all over the world.
